Recently the senior students have had lessons to do with our local marine environment and have studied the benefits of Marine reserves. This was part of the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme run by Samara Nicholas. Afterwards, all the children had to come up with an action plan about how we can help highlight marine conservation issues and also support the idea of the creation of a marine reserve in The Bay of Islands. This included informal posters and letters to MPs and newspapers. The students have been snorkelling at Long Beach, Urupukapuka Island and most recently at the newly established marine reserve at Whangarei Heads. On Tuesday the students presented their action plans to Samara, the programme coordinator. The students had put a lot of effort into these presentations that showed how a local marine reserve would benefit the area. Samara chose three students to go on a trip out to the Poor Knights Islands with students from other schools and go snorkelling in this world renowned dive spot. Cameron, Honey and Alfie are going to have an awesome trip – congratulations you three…take lots of photos |
